About Craig Ross

Craig Ross is a storyteller at heart, with a voice shaped by two decades of experience and a lifetime surrounded by creativity. Growing up in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha—a name that still trips people up), Craig was lucky enough to have inspiration all around him. His mother was a ballet dancer and painter, and his father, a voiceover artist and presenter, spent his days crafting scripts and making magic behind the mic. It was only natural for Craig to find his own path into the world of sound and storytelling.

From his school days at Muir College, Craig’s love for performance was impossible to ignore. Whether he was singing in the Eastern Cape Youth Choir, debating on stage, or grabbing a mic at any opportunity, he knew that using his voice to connect with people wasn’t just something he enjoyed—it was what he was meant to do.

Life took him on an adventure to the UK, where he joined a band, bartended, and discovered that his voice wasn’t just something people complimented—it was a craft worth honing. Back in South Africa, he dove into sound engineering, learning the ins and outs of production and working in some of the country’s top studios.

Craig’s perspective is unique—he’s been on both sides of the glass: the booth where scripts come alive and the control room where every sound is polished to perfection. This dual experience gave him a deep appreciation for the art and science of voiceover, shaping his philosophy that it’s more than just a job—it’s a way to connect, inspire, and tell stories.

These days, Craig channels his passion into VOISA (Voice Over Institute of South Africa), where he helps others discover the magic of their own voices. Whether it’s through his innovative techniques like the Modulation Wheel and Melody Graph or simply encouraging people to step up to the mic, Craig believes that voiceover is a colorful spectrum—a blend of music, emotion, and storytelling that can move hearts and minds.

About VOISA

VOISA (Voice Over Institute of South Africa) isn’t just an institute—it’s a home for voices waiting to be discovered, refined, and celebrated. Founded by Craig Ross, VOISA brings together over two decades of experience in voiceover, sound engineering, and storytelling to offer a space where aspiring and professional voice artists can grow.

VOISA’s mission is simple: to help people find their voice and use it with confidence and creativity. Whether you’re stepping into a booth for the first time or you’re a seasoned pro looking to fine-tune your craft, VOISA is designed to meet you where you are and take you further than you thought possible.

What makes VOISA special is its holistic approach. It’s not just about technique—though you’ll get plenty of that—it’s about the entire journey of a voice artist. From understanding the science of voice modulation to uncovering the emotional depth behind every word, VOISA empowers students to see their voice as a tool for storytelling, connection, and impact.

With innovative training methods, professional demo production, and the ability to work with clients worldwide, VOISA stands out as a leading voiceover institute. And at the heart of it all is Craig’s belief that every voice has a story, and VOISA is here to help you tell yours.

The Transition

The story of VOISA begins with a bold decision: to step away from the familiar and build something new, something that truly reflected the vision of its founder. Before VOISA, Craig Ross co-founded SAVOA (South African Voice Over Academy), a platform dedicated to voiceover training and production. While SAVOA had its successes, Craig realized it was time for a fresh chapter—one where he could fully shape the direction of his work and bring his unique perspective to life.

The transition from SAVOA to VOISA wasn’t just about rebranding; it was about creating a space that embodied Craig’s values and philosophy. It was about breaking away from limitations and building an institute that could adapt to the ever-changing needs of the voiceover industry.

What sets VOISA apart is its focus on the individual. Craig wanted to move beyond traditional training models to create a space where students feel seen, heard, and empowered. This shift also allowed him to expand VOISA’s offerings—bringing in new techniques, fresh ideas, and a global perspective to everything from coaching to sound design.

The transition wasn’t always easy, but it was worth it. VOISA is now a thriving institute that reflects Craig’s passion for voiceover and his commitment to helping others discover their voice. It’s a testament to the power of growth, change, and staying true to your vision.

Discover Your Voice

Voiceover is more than just speaking into a mic—it’s about discovering what makes your voice unique and learning how to use it to connect, inspire, and create. That’s exactly what the VOISA Taster program is designed to do.

The VOISA Taster is a starting point for anyone curious about voiceover, offering both an introduction to the craft and a chance to create something tangible. The program includes a one-hour online session and a one-hour studio session, where participants get hands-on experience with professional equipment and guidance from Craig himself (either in-studio or via Zoom).

During the Taster, participants work through five carefully chosen scripts that cover a variety of styles and tones. Each script is a chance to explore the different aspects of voiceover, from technical precision to emotional delivery. At the end of the session, participants leave with not just newfound skills but also a professionally produced demo—a critical first step in launching a voiceover career.

But the VOISA Taster isn’t just about learning the mechanics of voiceover; it’s about finding your voice—your tone, your rhythm, your story. It’s about discovering how to use your voice as an instrument to make an impact. Whether you’re exploring voiceover for fun or as a potential career, the VOISA Taster is your first step into a world of endless possibilities.
