What’s Next? The Voiceover Blueprint for Success
Every time I wrap up a voiceover course, there’s one question that always follows:
“What’s next?”
And honestly? I don’t know.
Not because there aren’t next steps—but because your journey is your journey. I’ve given you the tools, the knowledge, and the killer demo to back it all up. But I don’t know your schedule. I don’t know how much time you’re willing to dedicate. I don’t know how badly you want this.
What I do know is this: If you work it, it works.
So, if I were in your shoes, here’s exactly how I’d do it.
Step 1: Establish Your Presence
In this industry, being talented isn’t enough. People need to see you, hear you, and remember you.
• Build a one-page website – A sleek, professional space where clients can listen to your demos, learn who you are, and imagine working with you.
• Get your home setup in check – A well-treated space, a solid mic (Rode NT1, NT2, Focusrite bundle), and recording software that works for you (Audition, Pro Tools, or even a free DAW like Audacity).
• Acoustic treatment matters – Your space doesn’t need to be a recording studio, but it does need to sound clean, crisp, and professional. Show an acoustic expert a photo of your room—let them guide you.
Step 2: Show Up & Stay Loud
Your brand needs to be out there consistently—not once, not twice, but every single day.
• Social media is your best friend – Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram.
• Be active, be visible – Post videos of different delivery styles: hard sell, soft sell, character voices, corporate tones.
• Start small, think big – A producer could be watching your TikTok. A client could be scrolling your LinkedIn. You don’t know who’s watching, but they won’t see you if you’re invisible.
And if you’re thinking, “But social media feels like a full-time job!”—guess what? This is a full-time job.
Step 3: Find Work. Every. Single. Day.
Talent means nothing without effort.
• Freelance platforms – Fiverr, Upwork. If you work it, it works. These platforms aren’t instant money-makers, but the people who grind and strategically build their profiles get results.
• Local production houses & radio stations – Don’t wait for them to find you. Introduce yourself. Your first community radio ad could lead to your first national ad.
• Networking is everything – Meet producers. Connect with copywriters. Join voiceover groups. People remember voices. Be the one they remember.
Step 4: Keep Growing, Keep Refining
The biggest mistake you can make? Thinking your first demo is your last.
• Your voice will evolve – The more you practice, the better you get. Your delivery becomes sharper, your tonal control more refined.
• Keep collecting work – Every ad, explainer, IVR recording—ask for a copy. Build that portfolio.
• Work with a coach – Even the greatest athletes have coaches. Tiger Woods has one. Djokovic has one. You need one too.
So, What’s Next?
By now, the answer should be clear.
You work it. Because if you work it, it works.
No shortcuts. No sitting around waiting. No sending five emails and calling it a day. This industry rewards the doers, the grinders, the ones who show up every single day and put in the work.
One day, when you’re ready, an agent will come into play. But until then? You are your agent. You are your marketer. You are your producer.
So, what’s next?
You.
Now go make it happen.
Much love,
Craig
