Back to Basics: The Resilient Voiceover Artist
Monday, February 24th | 11:27 AM
In two days, I turn 40. They say life begins at 40, but I guess I’ll have to wait and see.
A few months ago, I made one of the biggest decisions of my career—I left an eight-year business partnership to go out on my own. It’s been exciting, but it hasn’t been easy. There have been moments of doubt, moments where I questioned whether I made the right choice. But deep down, I know I did.
Staying true to yourself isn’t always the easiest path, but it’s the one that matters most. Resilience is the key—not just in business but in life. And as I reflect on resilience, I realise how much it applies to the world of voiceover, too.
The Social Media Hype Trap
Today’s industry is driven by social media. Everywhere you look, someone is building a brand, creating a buzz, or seemingly skyrocketing to success. The pressure to constantly produce content, gain followers, and chase viral moments can feel overwhelming.
But here’s the truth: not everything is as it seems. Social media is, in many ways, a game—a well-crafted illusion where perception often outweighs reality. And in that space, it’s easy to feel like if you’re not on the hype train, you’re being left behind.
Should you have a TikTok account? Probably.
Should you post videos about your voiceover journey? Absolutely.
After all, you never know which producer might stumble across your work and decide you are the voice they’ve been looking for.
But should you obsess over it? No.
Social media can be a powerful tool, but it can also be a black hole—an addiction fuelled by algorithms that reward constant engagement. The more you post, the more likes you get. The more likes you get, the more you feel the need to post. It’s a cycle. And while it has its place, it should never replace the fundamentals.
Back to Basics: The Foundation of a Voiceover Career
Instead of chasing trends, take a step back. Think about what truly builds a sustainable voiceover career.
✔ A Strong Demo – Is your demo polished, professional, and truly reflective of your capabilities? If someone hears it, will they stop and say, “That’s the voice I need”?
✔ A Simple, Clear Online Presence – You don’t need to be on every platform, but you do need to be findable. A one-page website with your demo, a solid LinkedIn profile, and a professional social media presence (whether on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok) is more than enough.
✔ Networking – The voiceover industry can be isolating, but you don’t have to do it alone. Many voice artists tend to work in silos, guarding their secrets as if sharing them will take jobs away. But the truth is, your voiceprint is unique—just like a fingerprint. No one else can do what you do. Connect, collaborate, and grow with others in the industry.
✔ Technical Skills – Voiceover is no longer just about having a great voice. You need to engineer your own sound. Can you record high-quality audio? Can you do a playback session with a client? Can you edit your work professionally? If not, it’s time to upgrade your skills.
The DIY Mindset: No One Will Do It for You
Many aspiring voiceover artists make the mistake of thinking that once they have a demo, the work will just come to them. It won’t.
Even if you sign with an agency, you are still one of hundreds on their roster. They are busy, and their priority is not just you. You have to DIY your career—hustle, market yourself, and make sure people know you exist.
This means:
✅ Sending your demo to potential clients
✅ Showcasing your work online
✅ Reaching out to production houses, agencies, and brands
✅ Always learning and adapting
The industry is not for the faint of heart. You will face rejection. You will hear yeses, nos, and maybes—and sometimes, you won’t hear back at all. You might even get the job, only for the client to disappear. It’s a rollercoaster.
But if you commit, adapt, and push forward, you will find success.
Final Thoughts: Prayer, Purpose & Persistence
As I step into this new decade of my life, I am reminded of the importance of faith.
I pray over my business. I pray over my voice. I believe in aligning my work with purpose and trusting that the right opportunities will come when I stay true to my path.
So as you build your voiceover career, I encourage you to do the same.
🎤 Stay resilient.
🎤 Stay creative.
🎤 Stay authentic.
Your voice is your brand—and you deserve the best.
Here’s to building something incredible.
